Development of a Cost-Effective Channel Emulator for LEO and MEO Satellites Using Open-Source Software and SDR/USRP Hardware

We outline the development of a cost-effective channel emulator designed to accurately model communication links for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellite systems. The key cost-effective approach is to use open-source software frameworks and programmable hardware, i.e. Software-Defined Radios (SDR) / Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) such that the emulator facilitates detailed testing, verification up to the mark, and optimization of satellite communication (SATCOM) performance under various environmental and operational conditions.
